This annual $1,000 scholarship was created in Carl’s memory to help an eligible graduating student in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, continue their education.

Remembering Carl

A little about Carl.

Carl MacKinnon grew up in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Together with Diane, the love of his life, he raised four children and built a home full of laughter and good company. Carl was a loving husband, dad and “Pappa” with a quiet sense of humour and a way of making people feel at home. If you stopped by, you could always count on being offered something to eat.

The Way He Lived

These weren’t words Carl went around saying. They simply describe how he lived: taking care of his family, doing what needed to be done, and the grit to keep going when things weren’t easy.

The Scholarship

A scholarship in Carl’s memory.

Carl lived with complicated diabetes for much of his life. This scholarship was created in his memory to help a student who has also felt the impact of diabetes, personally or through someone close to them.

For 2027, the award is open to eligible graduating students from schools within the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional Centre for Education who plan to continue their education. We hope the $1,000 gives one student a little extra help along the way.
